</div>If you are a friend of the blog, you might have heard of Iran’s program to develop a solid propellant space launcher, the relationship of the space launch program to Iran’s missile ambitions and the 2011 explosion that wiped out most of the personnel associated with it. <div><br></div><div>To make a long story short, at some point in the mid-2000s, the founding father of Iran’s missile program, Hassan Tehrani Moghaddam — frustrated with both the Supreme Leader’s 2,000 km range limit and the slow bureaucratic apparatus of Iran’s missile industry – decided to set up an institutionally separate development effort for a solid propellant space launch vehicle that would also serve as a hedging strategy to acquire long-range missile technology. This move was surely aided by his close ties to Khamenei. </div><div><br></div><div>Unlike Iran’s well publicized liquid-fuel space program, Moghaddam’s project proceeded in complete secrecy until a large explosion killed Moghaddam and obliterated the Bidganeh site in 2011. Thanks to the hundreds of tiny puzzle pieces released over the years, we managed to reconstruct much of the history of this program. However, the most important question of all remained unanswered.</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7377058515611905498.post-10491995170120795382020-08-03T21:57:00.001+07:002020-08-03T21:57:19.703+07:00MiG-35, J-10C, Su-30SM and More: Five Leading Candidates to Modernise Iran’s Air Force from October 2020<div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>An assessment of the five leading classes of fighter Iran is expected to show an interest in, based on their capabilities and the Iranian Air Force’s requirements, is given below: </div><div><br></div><div>MiG-35</div><div><br></div><div>Possibly the ideal fighter for Iran, the Russian MiG-35 ‘4++ generation’ medium weight fighter will introduce many next generation technologies to the Iranian fleet - from powerful AESA radars and state of the art electronic warfare systems to three dimensional thrust vectoring engines and new R-37M hypersonic air to air missiles. The fighter is loosely based on the MiG-29 design, and can use much of the same maintenance infrastructure which will reduce the logistical burden on Iran’s already overly diverse fleet. The MiG-35 is approximately 80% less costly to operate than the MiG-29, meaning Iran may in the long run reduce costs by phasing out existing MiG-29 squadrons for replacement with the MiG-35 - alongside further acquisitions to form new squadrons. The MiG-35 entered service in the Russian Air Force in 2019, and its advanced avionics, excellent flight performance and unique armaments allow it to challenge much heavier classes of fighter including Israeli and Saudi F-15 Eagles. What the MiG-35 lacks in size and range, it compensates for in sophistication with three dimensional thrust vectoring engines, state of the art avionics and electronic warfare systems, and an air to air engagement range of 400km - almost four times that of the AIM-120C which equips the vast majority of U.S., Saudi and Israeli fighters. A leading attraction of the aircraft is its cost effectiveness and low lifetime operational cost - meaning Iran will be able to modernise more of its fighter squadrons without a large long term investment.</div><div><br></div><div>Su-30SM</div><div><br></div><div>Iranian interest in the Su-30, a heavyweight twin seat fighter derived from the Soviet Su-27 air superiority platform, has long been rumoured. An Iranian Defence Ministry source stated over five years ago regarding the Iranian acquisition of the Su-30, around the time of the visit by Defense Minister Hussein Dehghan to Russia: “Minister Dehgan will also discuss the delivery of Su-30 airplanes because the Defence Ministry believes the Iranian Air Force needs this type of plane. We’ve moved far in these discussions of purchases and I think that during the upcoming visit a contract will be signed.” This was also reported by Russian state media. The minister stated shortly before his trip to Russia, specifically citing the Su-30: “Today we need to pay attention to air force and aircraft and we seek to seal a deal with the Russians upon which we will have partnership in the construction and manufacturing of the jet fighter.” The Su-30SM is the latest and most capable variant of the Su-30 to enter service, and benefits from two dimensional thrust vectoring engines, a heavyweight high performance airframe and the ability to carry a heavy payload and large radar. The fighter is still less sophisticated than '4++ generation' Russian designs such as the Su-35 and MiG-35, but has a much higher operational cost than the latter. The fighter could be ideal to project power across the Middle East, and can comfortably outmatch most Saudi and Israeli jets as well as the U.S. Navy's F-18E Super Hornets while also deploying sophisticated standoff cruise missiles for anti shipping and air to ground roles. For a defensive role, however, the shorter ranged MiG-35 may be a more costs effective purchase - particularly given the logistical burden of operating this new and much heavier class of combat jet. </div><div><br></div><div><b><u><a href="https://militarywatchmagazine.com/article/mig-35-j-10c-su-30sm-and-more-five-leading-candidates-to-modernise-iran-s-air-force-from-october-2020">Read more</a></u></b></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7377058515611905498.post-69231872497546573832020-08-02T11:32:00.001+07:002020-08-02T11:32:53.567+07:00Sudanese Air Force Reports Successful Integration of U.S., Russian and Chinese Jets Into a Single Data Sharing Network<div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>The Sudanese Air Force has reportedly successfully integrated combat aircraft from the United States, China and Russia into a single data sharing network, facilitating grater synergy between various platforms during combat operations. The mainstay of the Sudanese fighter fleet is currently comprised of Soviet built platforms acquired second hand from Belarus, namely MiG-29 Fulcrum multirole fighters and heavier Su-24 Fencer strike fighters - alongside approximately a dozen Su-25 attack jets. The country previously acquired J-7 single engine light fighters from China, though whether these remain in service remains uncertain. Other Chinese designs in service include the Guizhou JL-9 twin seat trainer, which is also capable of an attack role, and the Nancheng Q-5 attack jet - an advanced and heavily specialised derivative of the J-6/MiG-19. </div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>Regarding American military aircraft in the Sudanese inventory, Khartoum received 12 F-5E Tiger third generation twin engine multirole fighters - though at least three of these have been transferred to neighbouring states. The country also deploys a single C-130 Hercules transport. With Sudan’s relations with the Western Bloc having since deteriorated considerably, the country has been unable to receive parts directly from Western Europe or the United States. It remains a considerable possibility however that the country has been able to receive parts for both its American transports and its fighters from Iran, alongside assistance in modernisation, with Khartoum’s defence partner having developed a domestic military aviation sector capable of manufacturing parts necessary to keep American jets operational. </div><div><br></div><div>Regarding the reported breakthrough in the country’s military aviation, General Salah Eldin Abdelkhaliq Saeed stated when addressing media: “Sudanese engineers have been able to make an adaptation between Eastern and Western platforms… They have even entered American, Russian and Chinese radars in one command-and-control center. We have provided all our platforms with a unified Sudanese surveillance system and Sudanese communication devices.” The General further noted that the country has had trouble operating several Western military aircraft due to economic sanctions, with the country lacking either the ability to manufacture spare parts itself or the maintenance capabilities needed to modernise them. </div><div><b><u><br></u></b></div><div><b><u><a href="https://militarywatchmagazine.com/article/sudan-reports-successful-integration-of-u-s-russian-and-chinese-jets-into-a-single-data-sharing-network">Read more</a></u></b></div><div><b><br></b></div><div><b><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div><br></div><div><br></div><div><div>We care about NOOR satellite because of all these reasons:</div><div><br></div><div>• Firstly, it is the first ever satellite launched by Iran's IRGC.</div><div><br></div><div>• Secondly, it is Iran's first military satellite.</div><div><br></div><div>• Thirdly, this success ends a long series of failed launches for Iran, with Fajr#3 launched on 2nd February 2015, being the last before six consecutive failures (19.04.2016, 27.07.2017, 15.01.2019, 5 February 2019, 29 August 2019, 09.02.2020).</div><div><br></div><div>• Fourthly, NOOR is achieving for the first time what Fajr#3 could previously not: manoeuvering in orbit with its own cold gas thruster system!</div><div><br></div><div>• Fifthly, as a consequence of the above 4th, the orbital life will be tremendous: instead of a couple of months like Fajr#3, generations to come will be able to watch NOOR, even when all the members of Pakistan Defence Forum have left this world, our grandchildren will still track this one satellite. In this regard, NOOR has joined China's first satellite DFH-1 and North Korea's Kwangmyongsong-3!</div><div><br></div><div>• Sixthly, with this outstanding achievement, this satellite might mark the beginning of the IRGC's space agency taking over the civilian space agency in all Iran's future space activities</div><div><br></div><div>• Seventhly, the satellite launcher carried to heaven the image of our beloved Martyr Major-General Qasem Soleimani, the Commander of the IRGC’s Quds Forces who formerly accomplished numerous other valorous achievements during his blessed life, as well as having a life that was characterized by extraordinary faith, exemplary courage and passionate attachment to Wilayat.</div><div><br></div><div>• Eighthly, NOOR is not only a tribute to Martyr Major-General Qasem Soleimani, it is also a testimony to Martyr Tehrani Moghadam who took great steps in the promotion of the IRGC military strength, the solid space launchers being his brainchilds.</div></div><div><br></div><div>More:</div><div><br></div><div><a href="https://defence.pk/pdf/threads/iranian-space-program.291303/page-146">https://defence.pk/pdf/threads/iranian-space-program.291303/page-146</a><br></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7377058515611905498.post-39626747673533794032020-06-05T00:27:00.001+07:002020-06-05T00:27:36.133+07:00Why Saudi Has No Aircraft Carrier?<div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<a href="http://defense-tech.blogspot.com/"><b>DEFENSE AND TECHNOLOGY</b></a> -- Really important news often goes unnoticed. They occur, no one notices them, but the events mentioned in this news often have consequences that later, having developed to a large scale, make observers gasp - and it’s good, if only out of surprise. (<b><a href="https://www.armyrecognition.com/weapons_defence_industry_military_technology_uk/turkey_uses_laser_weapon_technology_to_shoot_down_chinese_uav_wing_loong_ii_in_libya.html">more</a></b>)<br />
<br />
On August 4, 2019, one of these events occurred, mentioned in such news, but not noticed by anyone. For the first time, a combat vehicle armed with a combat laser destroyed another combat vehicle on the battlefield. In a real war, on a real battlefield. And no one noticed.<br />
<br />
Turkey is not sufficiently recognized in the ranks of the countries-innovators in military affairs. But it seems that they will be able to surprise the population of the planet in this century. The Turks took a powerful start as an industrial force, and any participant in military tenders in the Islamic world knows what strength they have already gained. The fact that it is the Turks who build skyscrapers in Russia is also no secret. Recently, there have been rumors about Turkish plans to build a springboard aircraft carrier, similar in “ideology” to Vikramaditye or Kuznetsov. The Turks participated in the F-35 program precisely as a manufacturer of components and plan to create their own combat aircraft.<br />
<br />
But with combat lasers, it turned out differently. Turkey, concerned about achieving military superiority in the region, as well as gaining qualitative advantages in military power over Greece and Russia (and, apparently, also over Israel), has long and seriously invested in innovative weapon systems, including weapons on new technical principles. In the early 2010s, the Turkish company Savtag demonstrated experimental samples of plants of different capacities, starting from 1.25 kW, and then up to 50 kW. The systems were created in conjunction with Tubitak, a state research institute. The Turks showed these systems as technology demonstrators and did not particularly hide the fact that they plan to use these developments as weapons.<br />
<br />
However, they managed to put all the observers on the wrong track - reports from both the Turkish Ministry of Defense press releases and the specialized press hinted that Turkish laser weapons would be primarily produced for the Navy, and in general, repeats American work. Nobody was particularly interested then. Well, the Turks ... Well, they want lasers ... So what?<br />
<br />
In 2015, Tubitak announced that experimental lasers successfully hit targets. Then it became known that the program was funded - it turned out that the Turks were pouring a lot of money into laser weapons - in 2015 alone, 450 million US dollars were spent on the program. For a country that has access to all Western technologies and already saves a lot of money on R&D, this was a very impressive amount. And, one must understand that other years did not differ much from 2015 either. Nevertheless, experts of most countries of the world Turkish progress, as they say, slammed.<br />
<br />
In the same year, it became known that the Aselsan holding, the largest Turkish military-industrial corporation, took the Turkish laser weapons program “under the wing”. On July 7, 2018, the company issued a press release stating that it had successfully tested a combat laser capable of hitting small-sized UAVs from 500 meters, as well as destroying explosive devices from 200 meters. The compact laser gun was installed on the Turkish Otokar Cobra armored car, and, most importantly, was equipped with a guidance system that allows you to continuously hold the laser marker on target.<br />
<br />
Laser power cannot be compared with any kinetic ammunition. It is insignificant. A projectile from a 76-mm cannon gives the target such energy that the laser can tell the target only by heating a single point for a very long time and continuously. And this is exactly what the specialists in optoelectronic systems from Aselsan achieved. Their gun could “cling” to a specific point on the target and “warm” it until it was completely destroyed. Even if the target was moving.<br />
<br />
And that all changed. In a press release, Aselsan emphasized that she was able to achieve reliable target tracking, continuous laser operation and an extremely low shooting cost. The latter is obvious. Where a conventional cannon spends a projectile that doesn’t have to hit the target at all, a low-power laser gun requires only diesel fuel for the generator. The company showed a photo of a machine armed with a laser, and a video presentation showing the results of firing at metal plates. Sensation, however, did not happen, and the news in the world was met quite calmly. No less calmly, the Turks continued to work on laser weapons. They knew that the most interesting press releases about their products were yet to come.<br />
<br />
The ongoing war in Libya did not go as Recep Tayyip Erdogan would have liked: the Islamists on whom he put are losing. This problem did not arise yesterday, and the Turks have been opposing the Libyan National Army of Khalifa Haftar for quite some time. The latter has the support of a wide variety of countries and forces - from Saudi Arabia and the USA to Russia and France. Haftar employs Russian mercenaries and pilot mercenaries Eric Prince, the founder of Blackwater, MiG-23s are being brought from Haftar to Russia, specially repaired for his Air Force, and from the UAE are the “Shell” air defense system for protection against airstrikes. And Haftar is slowly but surely winning.<br />
<br />
And Erdogan again, as elsewhere, set the wrong horse. As in Syria, as in Egypt, in Libya, those forces that Turkey regarded as friendly and relied on failed. True, in Libya, the Turks are still counting on something. Turkey continues to support the so-called “government” and its friendly Misurat groups. Turkey supplied and is delivering heavy weapons to these groups, sending advisers and instructors. Seeing that this was not enough, the Turks began to transfer to Libya the militants previously employed in the Idlib province in Syria. We will not delve into the course of this distant war from us, another is important to us.<br />
<br />
The synthesis of the need for Turkey to stop Haftar, on the one hand, and advanced high-tech weapons, which have no world analogues without discounts, on the other, should have happened sooner or later. And he happened.<br />
<br />
For operators of the UAE-owned UAV Wing Loong II, a Chinese-made aircraft, this was an ordinary reconnaissance and combat mission. Their drone armed with an anti-tank missile barraged over the Misurata area, conducting reconnaissance in the interests of Haftar’s troops and looking for targets that could be destroyed by a direct attack. The war in Libya has long taken the form of a bizarre mixture of the actions of irregular formations and weapons, created on the basis of the most advanced technologies, and UAVs were one of the symbols of such a mixture. The departure, however, ended with the UAV being shot down. And soon the world flew around the photo.<br />
<br />
The details immediately became known. The Turkish installation, which shot down the UAV, is mounted on the chassis of an off-road armored car. Like the earlier Aselsan model, it is equipped with a Turkish-made optoelectronic guidance system. The system allows you to accurately inspect the target for firing, to select a vulnerable point, and then hold the laser marker on this point until the target is completely destroyed. Also, as with the previously demonstrated laser gun, a continuous radiation mode is provided, without long interruptions to the "pumping" of the laser. The power of the gun is 50 kW. This is so far the most powerful combat laser in the Turkish ground combat vehicle.<br />
<br />
An important point is not an experimental setup. This is a fully functional combat vehicle armed with a laser gun. And she had just been tested in battle, and not at all against the "commercial" drone with E-bay. Such a gun could well bring down an unarmored helicopter, and easily. And Turkey can build such weapons in large quantities without any problems - now. And this is a tactical weapon, it does not need any special transportation conditions, a laser-armed combat vehicle has the same level of mobility as any other armored car of the same type. Ordinary soldiers, including conscripts, may well use these weapons. And the cost of firing this gun in the literal sense of the word is equal to the price of diesel fuel spent during the shooting. Let's just say, an unarmored helicopter takes about twenty-five rubles, approximately.<br />
<br />
<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="300" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/CDoABpPHaKI" width="100%"></iframe>
Will this episode be the start of a "laser weapon race"? Let's make a prediction: no, it won't. The epoch-making news, as they say, did not thunder. Well, who are the Turks in the world of war industry, right? The Turks will continue to improve their weapons, and no one will pay attention to them. And so it will be until, in some other war, Turkish laser guns on armored personnel carriers and tanks massively burn optoelectronic sights to enemy vehicles, burn engines for unarmored vehicles, shoot down helicopters and UAVs, and disable aircraft on the ground with long-distance, mowing infantry without noise and external unmasking signs. And then it’s all startled ...<br />
<br />
<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="300" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/7x_Um7IHEng" width="100%"></iframe>
The interesting thing in this whole story is how essentially newcomers to the laser theme occupy that niche in which the "grandees" of laser business, such as Russia and the USA, do not even think to climb. They occupy successfully and very quickly, building already practically serial military equipment faster than their competitors in the world read news about it - literally. This is all the more surprising because both Russia and the United States are superior to the Turks in laser technology and, in theory, should “attack with the threat of loss of advantage” - work ahead of the curve. There is something touched, and incomparable with Turkish, and there is some experience, we still have from Afghanistan. And a much more complex set for much more complex tasks, “Relight”, is already in operation in Russia. And the United States has a “working” ship installation. In a single, however, instance.<br />
<br />
But ground-based combat vehicles with tactical-level lasers are not being built and used in Russia or the United States. This is done by the Turks, and the transition of the quantity of their work to the quality of technology as a whole to a new level is a matter of the very near future. They will grow the faster the greater their combat experience. As well as not far off the “acquaintance” of the enemies of Turkey with what a combat laser is in its own skin - in the most literal sense of this expression. In the future laser arms race, the Turks have already claimed a prize for themselves, and it is not a fact that this place will not be the first in the end.<br />

<b><a href="http://defense-tech.blogspot.com/">DEFENSE AND TECHNOLOGY</a></b> -- Leading unmanned aerial platform developer Baykar on Monday delivered another batch of Bayraktar TB2 drones to Ukraine.<br />
<br />
Three aircraft, ammunition, a simulator, camera systems and ground data terminals were delivered to the Ukrainian Air Force.<br />
<br />
The newly delivered drones are being tested at the Starokostiantyniv Air Base in western Ukraine.<br />
<br />
"During the tests, the combat capabilities of the aircraft, maximum altitude, orbital flight, landing, and main and emergency power systems were tested," Ukraine's Defense Ministry said Tuesday.<br />
<br />
<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="300" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/lPFUYglYgj4" width="100%"></iframe>
Last month, Ukrainian Air Force personnel completed training to operate the drones. At the initial stage of use, they will be assisted by Turkish experts. Ukraine successfully tested the first TB2 drones in March.<br />
<br />
Looking to boost its defensive capabilities in the wake of Russian aggression, Ukraine announced the agreement to purchase 12 TB2 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in January.<br />
<br />
<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="300" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/BmYR61HW6qs" width="100%"></iframe>
The Bayraktar TB2 armed drones, produced by Baykar and operationally used since 2015, have continued to support the fight against terror in other regions while providing effective surveillance, reconnaissance and fire support to Turkish security forces in Operations Euphrates and Olive Branch. Bayraktar TB2 UAVs have played an active role in detecting, diagnosing and neutralizing thousands of terrorists to date.<br />
<br />
Performing active reconnaissance, surveillance and intelligence flights, the Bayraktar TB2 has the ability to transmit images to operation centers without delay and engage targets.<br />
<br />
It boasts a service ceiling of 8,239 meters (27,030 feet) and a flight endurance of 24 hours. It can carry 150 kilograms (330 pounds) of payload and can be operated day and night.<br />

<br />
<br />
<a href="http://defense-tech.blogspot.com/">DEFENSE AND TECHNOLOGY</a> -- In the next two weeks, the Iranian military will introduce their upgraded version of their Bavar-373 air defense system.<br />
<br />
According to the Russian aviation publication Avia.Pro, this upgraded air defense system will not only replace the Russian-supplied S-300, but also surpass the latter.<br />
<br />
“According to the data presented, the Iranian Bavar-373 radars can detect air targets at distances of up to 300 kilometers, and, in addition to aircraft, the radar is able to detect cruise and ballistic missiles, as well as small drones. According to unconfirmed data, the radar is also capable of detecting stealth aircraft, which makes it an effective means of combating F-22 and F-35 fighters, which, incidentally, were recently discovered near the Iranian borders,” the publication stated.<br />
<br />
“Iran has already announced that its own air defense system will allow it to compete with Russian air defense systems, which, in particular, is facilitated by its low cost,” they added.<br />
<br />
The Iranian military previously acquired the Russian S-300 in 2015, but their engineers had already begun working on a new air defense system to improve their capabilities.<br />
<br />
Some publications reported earlier this year that Iran was mulling the purchase of the Russian S-400 system; however, Russian officials later revealed that Tehran had yet to inquire about such an acquisition.<br />
